The men's 2034 World Cup will be held in Saudi Arabia after Australia withdrew its bid to host the competition.Just a few hours before Fifa's deadline for expressions of interest on Tuesday, Football Australia made its choice official.Only Saudi Arabia has submitted a bid.

"Football Australia has decided not to do so for the 2034 competition," the statement said.

Australia's governing body has said that it will concentrate its efforts on hosting the Club World Cup in 2029 and the AFC Women's Asian Cup in 2026.The 2026 World Cup will be held in the US, Mexico, and Canada.Along with Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, Morocco, Portugal, and Spain will host matches at the 2030 tournament.

According to Fifa's declaration, the 2034 World Cup will be held in Asia or Oceania, and Australia was the only nation that could potentially challenge Saudi Arabia, which announced its bid shortly after the organization's decision.

Even with the support of the Asian Football Confederation, Saudi Arabia would likely be viewed as an unwelcome host.It has been under fire for violating women's rights, criminalizing homosexuality, limiting free speech, violating human rights (81 men were hanged in a single day last year), and the conflict in Yemen.

The 2018 murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a well-known government critic living in the US, significantly harmed Saudi Arabia's reputation abroad. It has been under fire for violating women's rights, criminalizing homosexuality, limiting free speech, violating human rights (81 men were hanged in a single day last year), and the conflict in Yemen.

The 2018 murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a well-known government critic living in the US, significantly harmed Saudi Arabia's reputation abroad Human rights advocates claim that the Saudi government is engaging in "sportswashing," or using sport as a diversion from long-standing reputational problems.

Last Monday, Human Rights Watch stated: "The possibility that Fifa could award Saudi Arabia the 2034 World Cup despite its appalling human rights record and closed door to any monitoring exposes Fifa's commitments to human rights as a sham."

Amnesty International demanded on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia provide "clear and binding commitments" to the FIFA.It stated: "Prior to making choices about organizing the events, potential hosts must agree to human rights commitments.

"The best chance for Fifa to obtain binding guarantees to protect workers' rights, ensure freedom of expression and prevent discrimination linked to the World Cup is during the host selection process - not after the hosts have been confirmed and tournament preparation has begun."

Qatar's human rights record, treatment of migrant workers, and position on same-sex couples all contributed to criticism of the country's 2022 World Cup hosting. After receiving criticism from players, sponsors, and co-hosts Australia and New Zealand, FIFA abandoned plans to have Saudi Arabia sponsor the 2023 Women's World Cup. However, the country is eager to host the 2035 competition, having established a women's squad the previous year.

Similar to the 2022 men's tournament, the 2034 edition would most likely take place in the winter due to the intense summer heat; nevertheless, it would probably be more environmentally friendly than Qatar if the current infrastructure was updated rather than new stadiums built.

After Newcastle United was fully acquired by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) in 2021, manager Eddie Howe remarked, "Our trips out there to Riyadh and Jeddah were two very different experiences."
